Hello, it's lunchtime in Paris and the two finalists of the presidential election will debate this evening for more than two hours. Far-right candidate Marine Le Pen (Le Rassemblement National), who had a disastrous performance in her face-off against centrist candidate Emmanuel Macron (La République en Marche) five years ago, now has a chance for revenge.

What happened on Tuesday? Leftist first-round candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon (La France Insoumise) asked the French people to elect him as prime minister by voting for his party in the legislative elections scheduled for June.

Why does it matter? The Constitution says that the prime minister is appointed by the president according to legislative election results. Jean-Luc Mélenchon has made it clear that he is not interested in the second round of the presidential election. He has already expressed his opposition to Marine Le Pen without going so far as to call to vote for Emmanuel Macron.
